Monarchs Can’t Weather Bruins Storm
PROVIDENCE, RI – The Manchester Monarchs fell to the Providence Bruins, 3-2, in the first game of a home-and-home series at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center on Sunday afternoon.
Manchester (21-22-2-2) is in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with 46 points. Providence (26-16-0-3) is in second place in the Atlantic Division with 55 points.
Providence regained their two-goal lead at 3-1 with a power play goal by defenseman Torey Krug at 15:12 of the second period. Center Carter Camper fed Krug in the neutral zone as Krug gained the Monarchs zone down the middle of the ice. Krug skated to the top of the right wing face-off circle before wristing a shot midway up on the stick side of goaltender Martin Jones for his seventh goal of the season. Krug’s eventual game-winning tally was also assisted by center Ryan Spooner.
Providence opened the scoring at 4:46 of the first period with a goal by Camper. Krug sent a pass in front of the Monarchs net. Camper redirected the pass beating Jones for the goal. Left wing Craig Cunningham also tallied an assist on Camper’s sixth of the season.
The Bruins opened up a 2-0 lead with a goal by Cunningham at 18:59 of the first period. Camper took a pass on the right wing as the Bruins gained the Monarchs zone. Camper pulled up at the right point and sent a wrist shot on goal through traffic. The puck was stopped prior to getting to the net after deflecting off bodies in front of Jones producing a loose puck. Cunningham grabbed the puck and shot a backhand low on the stick side of Jones for the goal. Cunningham’s 11th goal of the season was also assisted by defenseman Garnet Exelby.
The Monarchs cut the deficit to 2-1 with a goal by left wing Tanner Pearson at 10:15 of the second period. Left wing Andy Andreoff kept the puck in at the right point before sending a pass to right wing Tyler Toffoli at the bottom of the right wing face-off circle. Toffoli sent a pass to Pearson in the slot who finished the play by wristing a shot midway up on the stick side of Bruins goaltender Niklas Svedberg for his 11th goal of the season.
Left wing David Meckler scored a goal just 37 seconds into the third period to bring the Monarchs within one goal at 3-2. After right wing Anthony Stewart kept the puck in the Bruins zone at the left point, left wing Colton Yellow Horn chipped the puck down the left wing boards to Meckler in the left wing corner. Meckler skated toward the net and wristed a bad angle shot from behind the net that deflected off of Svedberg for his second goal of the season.
Jones (11-16-2) took his 16th loss of the season making 27 saves on 30 shots. Svedberg (21-6-2) earned his 21st victory of the season stopping 21-of-23 shots.
Manchester went 0-for-1 on the power play. Providence went 1-for-6 with the man advantage.
Notables: The Monarchs are on a five-game losing streak (0-5-0-0)…Monarchs left wing Colton Yellow Horn tallied his first career American Hockey League point, an assist in his AHL debut.
