Kings and Muzzin Agree On Two-Year Contract
LOS ANGELES Ė The Los Angeles Kings, the parent club of the Manchester Monarchs, have agreed to terms on a new two-year contract with defenseman Jake Muzzin, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today.
Muzzin, 23, appeared in 45 games for the Kings last season, recording 16 points (7-9=16) and 35 penalty minutes. Among NHL rookie defensemen, he ranked second in goals, tied for fifth in assists, tied for third in points, first in plus-minus (plus-16, second overall among rookies), tied for third in power play goals (three), fifth in shots (77) and fifth in hits (70). Muzzin was named the NHLís Rookie of the Month for March and was selected as the Kings Best Newcomer (Mark Bavis Memorial Award). Muzzin also played in 17 of the Kingsí 18 post-season games, recording three assists and six penalty minutes.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pound native of Woodstock, Ontario has played in 56 career NHL games (all with the Kings), recoding 17 points (7-10=17) and 35 penalty minutes.
Muzzin was signed by the Kings as an unrestricted free agent on January 4, 2010. He was originally selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the fifth round (141st overall) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
Muzzin has played in 146 games for the Monarchs from 2009-13. He recorded 12 goals and 49 assists for 61 points, as well as 103 penalty minutes. Muzzin also collected nine points (4-5=9) and 10 penalty minutes in 23 post-season games with the Monarchs from 2010-12.
