The Manchester Monarchs and Portland Pirates have shared a rivalry since Manchester joined the American Hockey League in 2001. Portland won the first ever match-up, 4-3, on October 18, 2001. Since then, the Atlantic Division rivals have battled for dominance over the other with many memorable games.
Entering the 2012-13 season, the Monarchs have won 58 times including seven of the 12 match-ups last season and the Pirates have won 50 games with five victories coming from last season. In their only post-season match-up, Manchester swept Portland, 4-0, in the opening round of the 2010 Calder Cup Playoffs.
